After birth and being discharged from the hospital, your baby is followed up by your local municipal health center. You should contact the health center once you have returned home from the hospital. A public health nurse will conduct a home visit and invite you and your baby for checkups at the health center. There, health examinations are carried out by the public health nurse or a doctor. Your baby is carefully examined to prevent, detect and treat potential illnesses as early as possible. You will also receive information and guidance on keeping your child healthy. All visits and examinations at the health center are free of charge. Your child will attend a total of 13 checks before your child starts primary school. In case your child becomes ill between visits, you must contact your general practitioner. If you do not have access to a general practitioner you must contact the nearest out-of-hours medical service.
