Er zijn twee soorten spiraaltjes: het hormoonspiraaltje en het koperspiraaltje. Het hormoonspiraaltje wordt ook IUD (Intra-Uterine Device of gewoon spiraaltje) genoemd. Het hormoonspiraaltje bevat een hormoon, het koperspiraaltje bevat koper. Beide spiraaltjes voorkomen zwangerschap. Het spiraaltje is een klein object dat door de gynaecoloog in de baarmoeder wordt geplaatst. Het spiraaltje kan drie tot vijf jaar in de baarmoeder blijven. Pas dan hoeft het te worden vervangen.
