Medical treatment can cure most STIs or treat the symptoms. Without treatment someone with an STI might have or get:
- pain during sexual intercourse;
- difficulties getting pregnant (infertility);
- certain types of cancer;
- inflammation;
- damage to the heart, blood vessels, brain and nervous system.

If you have an STI and are not treated, you can infect your partner.
Talk to a doctor if you think you may have an STI.
The sooner you are treated, the less serious are the consequences of an STI. If you get treatment early, most STIs can be cured or the symptoms can disappear, without lasting damage to your health.
